I’ve got a theory. I came up with it today. There are many like it but this one is mine. It’s not based on anything privileged to me, just a feeling based on everything.
Whoever “they” are, the NHI want to bring humanity “behind the veil”, so to speak. But doing so includes giving us access to forces more destructive than our wildest imaginations. The kind of power that would make us a threat to each and every living thing that exists.
So what do they do to make sure they aren’t responsible for the worst disaster to ever affect the people of the universe? They make sure we’re ready.
And how do they make sure we’re ready? They give us a grenade and watch to see if we pull the pin. And when we do, we realize it was a fake grenade. They take it away and put us in timeout for a few dozen millennia.
Only it’s not a grenade. It’s technology from “recovered NHI craft”. You know… the kind that these ultra intelligent beings just happen to let us monkeys get our hands on… lasers, anti gravity, raw energy… tame stuff by their standards, but to us it’s enough to feel like a god.
And then they send a threat so terrifying, so destructive, that we are left with no choice but to use this horrible, nightmarish grenade that we’ve constructed with leftover parts if we want to survive. You know, something like an impending alien invasion.
And if we pull the pin, we fail. Only by accepting the end of everything we know and love, because the alternative (using a death ray against millions of alien lives because we think they’ll attack first if we don’t) is to become a plague upon existence and we know that it isn’t worth the price, do we succeed.
It’s gotta be completely believable though, lol. So if I’m right it truly will seem like the end of days.
But if we don’t pull the pin, yay, we are willing to sacrifice ourselves for the good of existence and life everywhere. Clearly we value life and are altruistic enough to be welcomed to the club.

The things you’re calling Religion started as just simple Rites and Rituals. There’s nothing special about it. Rites & Rituals + complex language = religious storytelling.
Elephants bury their dead, and grieve, and pay tribute to the bones of their dead. They’ve had 0 Alien-religion influence and yet they’re very clearly practicing things indistinguishable from religious practice.
Additionally, hominids have been burying our dead for hundreds of thousands of years. Not just Homo Sapiens but Homo Naledi.
If animals and proto humans have been doing the same basic rituals, before religion was even invented, I’d say it’s pretty clear we made religion and it wasn’t given to us by aliens.

I think you are right, and why the History channel and Ancient Aliens have been catering to gun toting red necks for the last 15 years. Appeasing the one group who would cause problems in a disclosure situation is a pretty good strategy.
I was thinking that they could be the creators of the universe or they could be the creators of this planet who have been here from the beginning.
Perhaps they are somehow multi phasic and each group needs a strong gravitational pull to keep them steady. Perhaps they exist around the other planets and or sun. Perhaps every planet or sun.

The reality is, humans are bored of doing the same shit every day, and they’re looking for some external force to bust in a reshape the way our world operates.
