World renowned physicist Richard Feynman perfectly decodes the discussions in alien reddit possibly and talks about martians when you sleep.

  1. Funny. As the video cuts off, seems like he was building up to something that i find existentially dreadful. And thats the fact that we speak about rest as if we know what it is. But nothings at rest and we’ve never experienced rest. Not on your day off, not at night in your bed, not on vacation or in death. You’re just always on in your experience or reality tunnel.

  2. I don’t know why but watching this somehow makes me think of Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting. I wish there was more I could say about any of it but this is what I’m left with in the end

  3. When I first watched this video, those bird names sounded like gibberish to me, but I did some research anyway, just to be sure, cause I was curious and couldn’t sleep.

So, I found out there is the Black-throated thrush (DE: Schwarzkehldrossel, ZH: 喉黒鶫 hēi jǐng dōng, JA: ノドゴロツグミnodogurotsugumi).

and the Brown-headed thrush (DE: Japandrossel, ZH: 赤胸鶇 chì xiōng dōng, JA: アカハラ Akahara).

but no «Brown-throated thrush». But then again, it could have simply been a misremembered name, since many birds have similar names, and there are A LOT of them (for example, just Wikipedia’s «List of birds by common name» counts 10,976 elements).

Also, in another speech from 1966, very similar to this one (here’s the full transcript:http://www.fotuva.org/feynman/what_is_science.html) Feynman makes the same example, this time calling the Brown-throated thrush «halsenflugel» in German and «chung ling» in Chinese. Other invented names apparently.

Maybe just to make us understand how useless names are if one has no idea of what they refer to in the first place.

  4. As interesting as Richard Feynman is, (he is my favorite physicist) he is only speaking of martians as part of a thought experiment and not any any terms of them being something real.

    This isn’t actually about aliens.

  5. The only tenuous connection I can make to the title is maybe OP is saying we reddit spends too much time talking about what things are called instead of what they are? Like is something a balloon or an alien ship. IDK but it doesn’t track — because when you have no access to details nomenclature serves as a description until you have more info.

That being said who else finds it funny that Feynman proceeds to name off, in multiple languages, the name for a bird then go on to say he never learns the name of anything? Kinds cheeky lol.

  6. Whatever he muttered for the Chinese and Japanese names of that bird didn’t sound like Chinese nor Japanese. His «Japanese» term for that bird sounds like traditional Mongolian throat clearing.

  7. In German it’s a Schwarzkehldrossel. It doesn’t take away from the point — and I get that this was a simpler time — but it would have aged better had he used the correct terms, and not just terms that sound like they’re from the origin languages stated.

I absolutely _love_ Feynman though, let’s get that right.

  8. «Talks about Martians when you sleep» is a bit misleading.. He’s talking about an approach he takes to research. He imagines he’s an alien or martian in this case, seeing everyday human things for the first time. It helps remove any predispositions or biases you might have.

In his book, Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman, he explains this sleep research. I haven’t seen the rest of this clip, but in his book, he claims to be able to lucid dream at will… as long as he doesn’t allow himself to fall into a deep sleep. He applied the «Martian» approach to this.
