This is one of my theories. Aliens planted us to terraform the planet to heat/change it up to their living conditions. They stopped by our planet at one point, planted us, then left to another part of the galaxy. Once they’re close to us in the galaxy again, they’ll see the progress we’ve made. Or perhaps they have drones inspecting the planet over time and will come when it’s ready. *smokes more of the crack in the crack pipe*.

But to stay on-topic, I think this theory doesn’t hold any weight because if we were taking care of the planet and actually improving it, the same could be argued. You could say that they planted us here to take care of the planet and are now here because we’re not. It seems no matter what we’re doing, this theory could be proposed and find evidence to support it (us ruining the earth or improving it) either way.
One does not set pollutionists free on a planet to do terraforming.

This is a silly hypothesis. Why would a technologically advanced alien race need a client species to terraform a planet over several thousand years, through a process which is depleting the planet of its natural resources?

My theory is that alien is a 4th dimensional race who is outside of space time. But they used to be us. They see how this outside of space time thing actually destoryed their society so they created us as a way for themselves to start over
Someone finally watched «The Arrival» and is starting to get it. A reptilian species would do quite well here. Plenty of heat, with more to come. An over abundant food source. And pre-built tunnel systems for them to hang around in until the food source comes running to them one day to escape the heat.

No, just think it out — You can heat or cool the planet much faster than we’re doing if you had the tech aliens are meant to have and you could also flood the environment with any chemical we make on a larger scale if you wanted without unnecessary byproducts or having to wait around for us to figure out how to do it.
